Stone recently launched a new project to celebrate the work of folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax. This collaboratory brings together some of the country’s most distinctive and creative roots musicians to revive, recycle and re-imagine songs from the Lomax archive. Collaborators include Grammy-winning songwriter Tim O’Brien, Bruce Molsky, Margaret Glaspy, Moira Smiley, Eli West, Brittany Haas, Julian Lage, Greg Garrison and Pharis and Jason Romero.
The Lomax Project transforms performing arts centers and festivals into a creative hub where eminent musicians gather to explore their roots, create new music and celebrate their collective cultural heritage through educational outreach activities and concerts. The repertoire includes Bahamian sea chanteys, African-American a cappella singing from the Georgia Sea Islands, weavers’ work songs, ancient Appalachian ballads and new songs inspired by the sounds, stories and melodies Lomax collected.
